Anyone deal with Bartholin cysts?

I have what I’m 95% sure is a Bartholin cyst.  I’ve had it for over 14 years (I first noticed it shortly after we got married).   I thought at the time that it was just swelling from sex.  It never fully went away but fluctuated in size over the years.

Several years ago after googling I self diagnosed it as a Bartholin cyst.  Most of what I read said that if it wasn’t painful/uncomfortable, or interfering with sex it was better to leave it alone than seek treatment as that often made things worse.

Recently it seems to have grown larger and is tender (when previously it was painless).  We did just come back from vacation where we had more sex than usual so I’m not sure if that contributed.  I have an appointment next week to have it looked at but I’m nervous to have it drained after hearing so many horror stories of it coming back even worse after draining.

Anyone else have  these and have success dealing with them yourself, or did draining them/surgical treatment actually help you?

TOP – thank you for helping us to discover what the cyst on her vaginal lips might be and how it might be treated.  The cyst is small and appeared some months ago.  She has not gone to see a doctor about it yet.  After reading your post she seems ready to do just that.  Your concerns are valuable.

Early-ish in our marriage I had a cyst right inside the entrance–is this what you are referring to? I discovered it in the process of showering one night and in the same instant it popped. It freaked me out but when I called the doctor’s office, the nurse said it was just one of the glands that produces the lubrication that had gotten clogged and it happens sometimes. (I don’t remember if that was the name for it or not.) It has never happened again.

Interesting you bring this up, TOP, my wife has been dealing with the exact same.  She is monitoring it.  This hasn’t affected our sex life at all.

Yes it’s a fluid filled lump (can range in size from pea to golfball, mine is about the size of a large grape). It is located just on the inside of the vaginal opening (can be on either side). It results from a blockage of the glands that are located on either side of the vagina that produce lubrication. Supposedly warm baths or compresses are supposed to help it pop/drain but I’ve never had success with them. It’s never been painful or interfered with sex before so I never sought medical advice but it’s starting to bother me. I’ll update after my appointment next week.

I have had a few times where I have gotten a very tender, pea size lump. It was pain while washing and that was what made me aware something was there. The first time it happened, I did some research and figured it was probably what you are speaking of, and it calmed my fears. Every time I have gotten one, it’s gone away within a week or so, and I have never faced having to decide whether to go get it checked out or to do something about it. Prayers for wisdom for you!
