Can the badge system be overridden?

Answered

Could the board Czar (not would he, but is it possible within the framework of the program) either disable a certain member’s ability to use comments on the grounds of misuse? Or could a user be stripped of their badge, despite the number of points?

I find the continued use of comments to sneak inappropriate material past the down-vote system distasteful.

Is there a way for the original poster of the question or of the answer on which a comment is made to delete inappropriate comments?

I’ve been trying to give the benefit of the doubt, but am really getting annoyed, as well as concerned for those who discover our forum and don’t know to ignore such content.

Or that they prey on those they see as “weak” privately in PMs.

These are great questions, and ones I have no doubt Dale will take into consideration.

I do know it’s possible for accounts to be deleted, which has happened before. It’s not fool proof because they could open another account, but at least they would be starting back at zero.

I feel this is especially important given the recent issues with the reporting system. New members are not going to know that we are to contact Dale directly rather than use the reporting system. I must say, although I wasn’t a member of the old boards, the current platform has some features that are cause for concern.

Duchess, I have noticed the same issue as well.  Thank you for pointing this out.

I posted this suggestion in another thread but I’ll  do so here as well, why not raise the number of points needed to make COMMENTS  to a KING BED? In doing so, trolls and troublemakers could only POST and therefore, all troublesome posts could be downvoted rather than taking potshots or giving unBiblical advice via COMMENTS. This would slow things down and force them to stick around a LONG time in order to comment? Or they’d leave OR be removed from this community forum. Thoughts?

Good suggestions regarding Comments. Two more suggestions.

              1. Create a ‘Latest Comments’ tab in the top Menu. Currently, it’s necessary to peruse through each Question to check on Comments to Answers. There are times that my Comments are germane to a specific posters Answer, but because Comments aren’t highlighted in the Menu, I’ll make a Comment as an Answer. When that happens an Answer that ought to be a Comment can get shuffled around the thread; disconnected to the original Answer. Also, by creating a Latest Comments tab an interloper on TMB won’t be able to be quite so anonymous.

              2. Consider building in an algorithm automatically to ‘warn’ and ‘remove’ a User with x, y, and z number of down votes on Questions, Answers and Comments. The numbers would have to be reasonably established to avoid nixing someone for ‘accidental’ downvotes registered (it can happen with a slip of the finger) or in the case of a ‘not so good’ Answer or Comment that any of us could make (not thinking too well, poor grammar, misunderstood, etc.).

There should be different thresholds.  I’ve had some of my answers down voted because people disagree.  I’ve even had an answer that was up, down, up, down, up, down which I thought was interesting.  I think the vote system and pushing down voted answers to the bottom is a brilliant idea being a self policing peer review of sorts.

The question is, is it enough for someone with a bad intent who is actively trying to be snarky, rude, inappropriate, etc.  Naturally the “report” option comes to mind for these situations, though I can see them being handled with a “-7” down voting as well and that in and of itself communicates something.

I thought the comments required a certain number of points in terms of cost.  Maybe the cost of a comment needs to go up.

PM’s are a whole different situation, a place where people can operate in the dark.  They should be limited to a certain level of participation to eliminate those who want to join for bad reasons.

The badge system cannot be overridden without doing away with it entirely.

I will look into raising the PM limit, however, so some of these concerns can be addressed.

As always, if someone PMs you in an inappropriate way, please let me know.

                  Thanks!!
