How do you get 30 points? And isn’t it hard to find a topic in the new dropdown menu?

How do I get 30 points?  Does this post help?  Can we have a forum for people to post and get points?

In one of the menus (on my tablet and computer it is on the left), there is a link that says “Badges”, that shows a point system.  Yes, asking a question helps build up points.  I think answering questions may as well, but it doesn’t say that.  I suggest to start answering Today’s Question of the Day and watch your points and see if they increase.  Also, ask more questions 🙂

ETA: even if answering a question doesn’t give you points, it does present the opportunity for your answer to be voted up, which will give you points.

I found this under “HOW TO and General Information”….

POINTS: The site has a point system. You get points for asking or answering a question. You also get points if your question or answer is upvoted. The OP can select the best answer, which also awards points. If the OP later selects another answer as best, the previous best answer loses the points they got for being best.
If you have reached 500 points, you can downvote answers. Doing this cost both you and the writer 2 points. Downvotes are intended to make poor answers less visible, it’s not a way of disagreeing.
The point system helps to limit spam. Over time it will also move the best answers to the top, so others will see the best first.

COMMENTS: Comments are the place to discuss an answer. You must have 30 points to comment, but you can always reply to comments made on your answers.

As a relatively new user, the points encouraged me to go ahead and post as opposed to just lurking. I wanted to be able to up vote answers and I want out of that twin bed, lol! That said, once I started getting points, it seems they just accumulate randomly (or maybe I’m just not paying close enough attention.) I would kind of like to be labeled “Fell out of Bed” because I think that’s funny, but I’m not going to post things just to accumulate points to get there. I post because I have something (I hope, interesting) to say.

I feel like people are getting too hung up on the point system. Does it really matter?

Yes it matters, because without enough points, I couldn’t post this comment to you.  I could make another “answer” but those are technically supposed to be directed at the original question.  If you want to discuss an answer (as opposed to the question,) you’re supposed to use the comments.  If I didn’t use the comments, the upvoting could shuffle all the answers and conversations will get out of order and difficult to follow.

The biggest hinderance and major downfall to the comments, IMO, is there is no notification that someone has commented on your answer. They are easily missed.

I’m not crazy about the point system. Who cares??? Just encourages people to post stuff for the sake of posting it IMO.  Maybe that’s why this board, so far, IMO, is sub-par to the old board.  Hope it picks up as more people come back.

At least I’ll get 2 points for posting an answer 🙂
