Men who do TRT, are there any who don’t do HCG? Or, who have stopped HCG?

My husband has been doing TRT since March 2018, including HCG. He is still having to do labs and meet with the doctor every 3-4 months to get that “sweet spot” figured out. (But his overall numbers continue to improve and look great!)

This last appointment, last week, he was asking about stopping HCG because it doesn’t appear to be doing one of the jobs he was taking it for (shrinkage), and he also isn’t in the mindset of fear that he may have stop the whole TRT in the future.

The doctor suggested just keeping it because it’s not hurting anything. And the only two cautions he gave of stopping was more testicular shrinkage and pain, a constant ache of the testes.

I suggested, what do we have to lose to try stopping, but potentially a couple of weeks of achy balls, because if you notice significant shrinkage and it bothers you, and/or you notice an ache beginning to form, you can start right back up. But why spend $400 a year just to “keep the status quo” (the drs words)?

To add to my initial questions…. have you noticed with not taking, or when you stopped taking HCG, but continuing on testosterone, any significant shrinkage? Have you dealt with these achy testes?

I was just re-reading this and I thought that I’d make a suggestion to your DH. About a year ago, after discussions with my doctor,  I changed my protocol. That is in  number of injections.  So, when I started TRT  I was injecting once every 2 weeks 200ml.  After a while, I went to weekly injections of 100ml.  Then last year I went to 3 times a week (Sunday at 3pm, Tuesday at 11pm and Friday at 7am).  Each shot is .25ml. My doctor and I are so impressed with this new protocol.

HCG helped me with both of those issues. I think it also increased sensitivity for me.  If you read ExcelMale, some me don’t care about the shrinkage. Just cosmetics to them. If they have no pain, they don’t use HCG.

If he is not seeing any increase in size, it may be a dosing issue?

You’re right, it wouldn’t hurt to stop and see what happens.

My dh has been on T therapy for years and does not use HCG.  He did HCG for a while on its own when he came off testosterone for us to be able to conceive our last child.  Our insurance does not cover HCG and the cost for us was over $300 a month so we could not afford it long term.  He has been back on testosterone alone for about 4 years now.  He did experience some shrinkage which bothered him a bit a first but it didn’t have any negative effects on sex, enjoyment and sensation remains the same for both of us.  He never experienced any aching or pain or other discomfort from not using HCG.

Have been on TRT for 2 years and on HCG for 1 year. I really think HCG has helped me. It helps my body to produce natural T.   While it is not enough natural T,  it is always best to keep you testes working IMHO. I’m more sensitive and I’m convinced it helps with my libido.

Every lab/appt up until this last one, he was upped his HCG dose, he is now maxxed out….meaning, any more than the amount he is prescribed has no added benefit, so it is a waste.

My DH has never used HCG and he’s been on TRT since 2010.   He did have some testicular shrinkage but wasn’t bothered by it.

Getting to this question late, as I was out of commission for a while due to work stuff.

I’ve been on TRT (gel) for over 10 years.  There was some testicular shrinkage, but as we were done having kids it was no big deal to me.  The good news is they don’t shrink away to nothing! 🙂

Thought about HCG, but the overall benefit didn’t seem worth the cost for me.  I’ve never had issues with decreased sensitivity or anything, and I feel wonderful on the TRT and won’t ever stop it!

@Dale, we were told by the doctor that some men do shrink to pea size.  That made my husband go 😯  😯 … 😆   His biggest concern with shrinking is that means certain toys wouldn’t be able to be used.

Because this was a concern, my husband did go buy some kind of measuring device, and a week and half past his last dose, he actually saw a slight increase in size.  What’s up with that? 😉

Here’s a good article on HCG use by Dr. John Crisler, now deceased. He is of the opinion that HCG helps fill in hormonal backpaths. That it’s good for more that just atrophy and fertility.
