Place for more intimate back and forth?

After seeing how the “new site” works, with the question – answer format,  it seems it is not designed to be conducive to a discussion format. That’s fine. But where would one go if they didn’t have a specific question but sought more of a running dialogue on a subject?

If you click on “Oldest” sort, then you see the answers in order and sometimes they reference each other in a discussion format.  Also, comments to an answer are usually discussion based.

There are aspects of the discussion style that I miss. Yet, with limited time for this, some long posts and ongoing discussions took too much time for me to keep up with them.

But, as has been noted, there are discussions that take place even in this format. So, perhaps you could pose a discussion question.

This set up isn’t as conducive to it, which I feel is one of the biggest negatives to the new vs the old. The problem with comments, like sd595 mentioned, there’s no notification about them, so they are easy to be missed, especially the longer time goes from the original question being started.

You can start a “question ” without really asking a question. When you have more to add, just go back to it and add an “answer” (not a comment). New answers will go into the “latest answers” and I think many have learned to keep their eyes on that.

              A couple of tips….

              1. You can use an @username, to direct an “answer” towards a specific person and their answer/comment. (This goes into the notification bar, or sends notifications via email.)
              2. It is helpful to somehow share what you are specifically addressing in a reply, whether you copy a direct quote, or somehow state what you are replying to, i.e “re: intimate discussion”.

It’s a tough format to use. I only use it through mobile devices, and the mobile site lacks many of the features that are seen on the desktop. For example, I can’t access the PM page at all unless it notifies me that I have a new PM. I am unable to sort by newest answer within a thread, and so the voting system causes some threads to be very confusing for me to read. I can sort all the topics by which one has the newest response, but that’s it. And I don’t have access to editing, or site how-to pages.

You see dialogue within answers, but without the ability to sort by chronology, this dialogue is tough to follow because of the voting system.

Are you sure you can’t switch the answers to “Oldests” from “Vote”? On my phone, if you go up to just under the question, there is a bar that says “[#] Answers” and then has a drop down box where you can select “Vote” or “Oldest”…. but I am not sure it always works, but it is there.

Something I have noticed is on my phone, I can’t access links shared in the comments, clicking on them does nothing.  Have you noticed that at all? I am not sure if it is a system thing or if it’s a “my phone” thing :/

@SC: my phone (iPhone) doesn’t change the ordering when switched to “Oldest” sorting. I, almost by default, switch the ordering to “Oldest” on a computer/tablet, so not being able to do this on a phone is very frustrating.

@DG: SC beat me to it, but definitely use her link for direct access to the PM’s page. If you forget, just remember it’s the normal site with PMS tacked onto it.

Honestly, if I could only access this site through phone, I probably would not be a member/participate.

@Scott, on your phone, can you access that link I shared above? (eta: in the comments)

                on February 12, 2020.

@SC: Well, color me surprised. I almost just rattled off “of course I can”, but then thought I should try it first…can’t click on it. When I say that, I mean the commented one…links in comments don’t seem to work on my phone! However, the link you left in the answer worked both times I tried it…yet another oddity of these boards!

I only have access through my phone, as well. The only links that work for me are the ones Elevation posts, and once in awhile those from SC, and Scott, work too. But maybe its the ones posted in comments. I’ll keep any eye on that. I’m as far from computer savvy as they come. But for certain reasons, I won’t ask our teenage DS. He would figure this all out for me, in a heartbeat.

I have to say that those that only access the site through phones show some real dedication!

I will suggest, if you have tablet access, you should consider doing that. For our tablet at least (an older iPad), it’s the same format as on the computer. And that format is far, far superior to the phone one.

@Scott, something to consider when adding links in the comments (which is appreciated!), maybe instead of doing a “title” that has an embedded link, actually share the address, that way, phone users can copy and paste it, or go type it in (if we can’t copy) on a new browser tab so we can find it that way, otherwise we may have no clue where you are actually linking us back to.

                on February 12, 2020.

So I was just playing around with this…on my phone, I can’t even copy text from a comment, leaving the only option as a manual-type-in one. How deflating… Oh, and I have no problem copying text from a question or answer, just the comments.

Thanks for the link! Like Scott, I can’t access links in comments, but I can if they’re in a reply. And the drop down toggle doesn’t switch from most votes to oldest replies, either. I appreciate that link and will bookmark it.

The old site was much, much better in content, organization and ease to use.  So far, I’m disappointed in this new version.

I did notice that sometimes posts are in order, and sometimes not. I didn’t know the voting system did that. I pay no attention to the voting system anyway, so if went away, it would be an improvement if the posts stayed in order.

Same with the comment ability. It’s nice that it’s there, just to address a particular post, without hijacking the OP’s question. It would be nice if new comments showed up, either as a new category, like ‘latest comments’, or better yet, just mixed in with the latest answers, but tagged as a latest comment.

I suppose that all that is not as easy as it seems, as far as tweaking the software goes. I assume that the new format is easier on the wallet than the old, so that’s why it’s what we have now.

All proves……people do not like change.

I found the old site too much to keep up with.  I find the new format brief and more exact in the time frame that I can afford to give.  I like the change but understand why others may not.
