Recent Quirks with TMB QNA and Voting?

Answered

Has anyone else experienced “weirdness” in the upvote/downvote system recently?

The QNA the past couple days, but today particularly, has given me some odd behavior. Specifically, I’ll upvote an answer, but the result doesn’t appear to get logged. But sometimes it does, though it seems random when it works. And on at least one thread I appear to have upvoted the same things more than once (please note I DID click it twice when things didn’t seem to work). In fact, my left sidebar (on computer) has me upvoting 6 answers on a thread that has fewer than 6 answers.

Even weirder is that these “missing votes” still seem to be somewhat logged. This can be observed in mobile mode, where “votes” normally count as “comments” as well. This is easily seen on Today’s QOTD, where e.g. OWM’s answer is shown to have 4 comments but no votes…that would be only be possible if two upvotes and two downvotes cancelled each other since that answer has no “real” comments. DG’s answer has 3 “comments”, implying 3 “votes”, but still a vote score of “0” (which is impossible with 3 votes). Finally, when sorting by votes, that thread has the answer  from “runningwithdog” ahead of NWNL’s answer even though NWNL’s answer is 6 hr older and supposedly has 0 votes too, so the older one should show first.

One last thing–the only answer on that thread with any votes tallied comes from “slipthegrasp”, which also happens to be the only answer with a “real” comment. Coincidence?

    Anyone else seeing this?

@runningwithdog:  The best primer on the voting “system” is, to my knowledge, this explanation by PaulB. Also, the best presentation of the “results” of voting I am aware of is the badges page.

@mcgruff: I’m fairly certain the downvotes are real, as I have run into no problems with downvoting (my downvotes work immediately, unlike my upvotes). I think part of what you’re seeing is fallout from before you became a member, specifically last November, when TMB QNA had a big problem with troll posters who clearly were not here to learn about or discuss Biblical marriage. See the The wolves… thread for some info. There was another post from that time that went into even more detail but no longer appears available. To give you an idea of how bad it was, I had only recently gotten the points needed to do a downvote, and I nearly downvoted myself below that threshold and out of the ability to downvote! People are more aggressive about downvoting things now because of that situation, which I think is a good thing.

I can only speak for myself in that I think there are still several trolls on here on a semi-regular basis (the multitude of downvotes would tend to say I’m not the only one that thinks that way). In fact, I can name over half a dozen off the top of my head for whom I have this suspicion…probably another half dozen if I went back to problematic threads and got names I’m not as familiar with. When dealing with this perceived problem, I’ve taken the “This is not useful” description of the downvote button very much at face value–what I mean by that is that if a post is not useful, even if is not blatantly bad, then I reserve the right to press that button if I think it is warranted. What usually warrants it are the comments left by the “trolls” in random places that are unbiblical and just flat-out not in the spirit of this community. Comments cannot be voted on, so you’ll frequently see worse stuff in comments than elsewhere (I actually use this as part of my determination if someone is likely a troll). So, for me, if I see a bad comment like that, then the first “not useful” question/answer I see from that person gets a downvote. They are hurting this community with their behavior, and that is my way of working against it, however small the effect of my effort may be. And they are hurting the community. When the troll threads pop up and get active, I tend to disengage here, which I know is horrible because this forum has helped my marriage bed so much. And we’ve also lost several long-time regulars since I joined (in October), and I have good reason to believe that the trolls caused the departure of at least one of those regulars.

One final issue regarding the confusing downvotes that may happen is a flurry of downvotes can happen on an answer, and then the  person that made the offending answer will edit their answer to not be so offensive. I know for a fact this happened at least once…in fact, it was on the most downvoted answer I’ve ever seen (that I can remember anyway), which now reads largely benignly.

All that said, there may occasionally be downvotes on answers that people either disagree with or disagree with the attitude behind said answer. I’ve seen a little of that, and I’ve personally received at least one downvote in the past (in my case, regarding an answer I made where I disagreed with the solo-masturbation-embracing attitude often taken here). My thought is that the “this is not useful” label on the downvote can mean a range of things, including downvoting things you don’t agree with.

      [Sorry for the rant.]

Nice 🙂 Thank you for bringing awareness again to this topic!

      Thanks, that’s useful info.

Great explanation. I didn’t even think about the fact that some are using comments that way.

LiL – yes, and the worst part is that there are at least a few comments on older threads and the comments don’t give an e-mail notice or show up in the sidebar. So no one is there to refute them, so in the future new users may seem them and be turned off by that aspect of TMB.

I’m having the same thing. It will say 3 comments, but nothing there. No votes or comments.

It also seems like posting and voting can take longer to post or register…or even need a screen refresh

I have noticed for a while (a weekish) there being numbers under comments, which would point to there being votes, but it not registering as an upvote. I almost said something myself in a question 🙂

I just clicked on someone else’s thread which said 4 comments, but no votes or comments.

Agreed. I’ve been noticing this for a few days. Comment numbers where there are no comments or votes. At first I thought it was the result of downvotes cancelling upvotes, but the math doesn’t always work correctly. It seems very glitchy of late.

I really need to find a primer on this whole up vote/down vote thing. I’m so confused (and new here)

It has seemed to me that upvoting takes a little while to get logged. Recently I had thought an upvote of mine wasn’t logged although it was when I came back a few hours later.

Also, I’ve sometimes been confused by downvotes. I suppose some people are voting down certain answers for reasonable reasons I’m not catching, but sometimes I see downvoted answers that are not unbiblical or off topic or otherwise obviously objectionable and part of me wonders if downvotes are being recorded by mistake.

Numbers, comments and upvotes aren’t adding up. There are no comments to read the last couple of days, unless people aren’t commenting at all….

Yes. I have seen a “comment” being present but nothing is really there.
