What sort of geekiness do we share?

Several folks have admitted to being geeks lately and I am wondering what fandoms we represent?

1-Do you and your spouse consider yourselves geeks?

2-What are your top 3-5 favorite fandoms?

3-What will you go on for hours about when you can find a like-minded someone?

No, we don’t consider ourselves geeks, I am not even positive what would constitute a geek. Although I was told by a self-proclaimed geek that I grew up on enough things, like Incredible Hulk, Superman (Christopher Reeves style) and Wonder Woman, to maybe fit into the group. I have never seen a single Star Wars movie.

I don’t know what a “fandom” is, though I could take a guess. We do like, and have watched all the Marvel movies. I do desire to get the sets of the whole Marvel series, and then watch them in the order which they were supposed to happen in time.

Under the stars Answered on February 27, 2020.

Now that would be a challenge! I think those Marvel movies are up to somewhere close to 20 if you put all the disparate stories in. We’ve seen most (not necessarily in order), except for a few DH has attitude about, LOL! 😀

      Gotta love Thor!

        To contribute my own answer:

        1-We revel in it!

2-(In no particular order) Bones, Harry Potter, Narnia, and Wonder Woman. (There’s a bunch I have familiarity with and favorite parts of, but don’t feel like they are as much a part of me.) On a next level down might be Agent Peggy Carter. I considered adding LOTR, but then got to thinking about all the other classic lit that I like just as much and couldn’t pick a favorite.

3-I love to talk stories! Books mostly, but a well written tv series with characters that grow and change can be just as compelling. I like to analyze it and take it apart and compare it to life and see what I can learn from it and then do it all again and again! The Harry Potter universe is such a delightful place to play! If I could have one thing out of all the magical fantasy things in all those books, it would be Dumbledore’s Pensieve. My fellow Hogwarts alums will know what that is! 😀

Under the stars Answered on February 27, 2020.

Oh yes, LOTR. I should have put that on my list. Huge fans.

I have not seen the X-Files. I think it might be free on Prime; might have to check that out next time I’m looking for something to watch. Quite familiar with your other four! 🙂

Yes.  You’ll definitely have to check it out.  90s nostalgia.

            Most definitely!

2-What are your top 3-5 favorite fandoms?

Star Trek (both of us), Star Wars (mostly DW), Person of Interest (both of us), LOTR, and Narnia

3-What will you go on for hours about when you can find a like-minded someone?

Star Trek! I’m more into Star Trek TOS and TNG. DW loves Star Trek Voyager.

We loved Voyager too! Janeway is my girl! (Plus she is Mrs. Columbo, so–double points!)

We are at least mold geeks.

              Favorite fandoms:

              Harry Potter
              Disney/Pixar
The Good Place / Brooklyn 99 / Parks and Recreation
              Star Wars
              Marvel
              Firefly

Mold geeks? Something I haven’t heard of or typo?

Have always loved Disney classics and Pixar raised the bar for everyone, in our opinion. Leslie Knope for President! My DD and I waffle on whether my DH or her BF is more like Ron Swanson. Never tried The Good Place because we were holding out for Veronica Mars.

I’ve noticed a distinct partiality to Marvel; does no one like DC? Granted Marvel makes better movies (although DC is improving) but DC is way better in every other way! 😉

My wife is the furthest thing from being a geek. She supports my interests but she isn’t into that kind of stuff.

Top fandoms would be video games, comic books, and movies related to either of those.

I will run my mouth for hours on anything related to Legend of Zelda!

Comic books covers an awful lot of ground. For one thing, Marvel or DC?

1-Do you and your spouse consider yourselves geeks?

Mrs. Oldbear – sort of – she’s super analytical and is a math/physics whiz. Our son is truly a geek, wears T-shirts celebrating his geekiness, works in a super complex data science lab, reads technical books/manuals for fun, is a Trekee, has all manner of LEGO models at home and work . . . he’s nearly 40 years old. People love him!

2-What are your top 3-5 favorite fandoms?

Midsomer Mysteries (BBC) – both of us, Jack Reacher (Lee Child books) – me, Monk – both of us

3-What will you go on for hours about when you can find a like-minded someone?

                  Fishing

MONK! I forgot Monk, but yes we love him too! And Psych!

My brother got all the math and physics; I got all the English. DH is a nice blend of both with history added in for good measure!

We also like a lot of BBC shows, though I haven’t tried that one. Father Brown Mysteries and Dr. Blake are fabulous. (And to add in an Australian one–Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is also terrific!)

1-Do you and your spouse consider yourselves geeks?

Absolutely! We’re mostly geeks in video games than movies 🙂

2-What are your top 3-5 favorite fandoms?

In no particular oder, Nintendo (Mario, Zelda, ect.), Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts, D&D, and to name a movie series, The Marvel Cinematic Universe!

3-What will you go on for hours about when you can find a like-minded someone?

Pretty much any of the games mentioned above. It’s what really interests us so we love talking about it!

Do you find that your shared fandoms add a layer of romance to your love story? For example, do Star Wars die hards think of yourselves at Leia and Han? Do you often quote, “I love you!”; “I know.” ?

We do a little actually! More in a playful romance than sexual romance kind of way. My first flirt to my husband with a game reference (before getting engaged) was “You’re the key to my heart” (Reference to Kingdom Hearts). He was super flustered about it <3 We’ll sometimes say things like “I Choose you” (Pokemon) or “You’re my Sora/Kairi” (KH). It’s sweet and I love it a lot <3

Do you find yourselves becoming fans of something you initially rejected primarily because it reminds you of your spouse?

There’s a few TV shows I’ve gotten to like that I wasn’t interested in because of him lol

Does the zing of enjoying a favorite thing add energy to your marriage bed or does the fascination you have for a particular interest take away from the MB?

If definitely brings us together! It’s nice knowing your spouse likes the same things you do 🙂

Do you ever borrow personality traits from favorite characters to alter your approach to LM for the sake of variety or just  because the mood strikes?

Never role playing an actual character, but I do try to approach with different vibes. (Sometimes sweet, sometimes slightly aggressive.) I wish he would!

We are most certainly geeks, although I’m a little deeper into geek culture than Wifey is. I am likewise an engineer, but aerospace rather that electrical. I made it through my one EE class in college by thinking about current flow as an incompressible fluid through a network of pipes. Wifey is a self-described nerd because she was more into book fandom as a kid.

                      Our top fandoms are:

Harry Potter; we started reading The Sorcerer’s Stone with the kids as our bedtime story

                      Superhero movies (Marvel and DC),

Firefly; we love Nathan Fillion as an actor, we both really liked Castle until they messed with the storylines

I grew up with Star Wars, Wifey grew up in a Trekkie family, but we enjoy both

In book fandom we split, Wifey is a Twilight fan and every few years will pick them up and read them again. I love the Ender’s Game and Shadow series by Orson Scott Card. We both also liked the Percy Jackson series, but Rick Riordan started pushing a pro-LGBT agenda in the later books that we didn’t care for.

I’ve described AEs as jacks-of-all-trades, masters-of-none so I can pretty much connect with any fandom. I’m conversationally fluent in Pokémon and Dr. Who, and have friends who are big into tabletop gaming. I was big into simulation and RPG games as a kid, I could talk about Sim City layout strategies or Diablo 2 character builds for longer than people would feel comfortable.

I keep thinking of things to add, 3-5 is too short a list! I’m into retro console gaming, mostly games I liked as a kid. I have a raspberry pi that I turned into a retropi so I can play NES and SNES games. I was disappointed that the raspberry pi isn’t powerful enough for N64 games.

Super Carlin Brothers is a fun youtube channel for HP, Marvel, and Disney/Pixar fandom, they have lots of videos about fan theories and more intricate details and thought experiments.

Okay, now I want to have you all over for dinner! Did you ever see NF on Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place? He was a minor character, but that’s where we saw him first! DD introduced me to the Percy Jackson series, which I love, and she went on to read most of his other series, but I think she found them less satisfying; she hasn’t been excited enough about them to catch my interest. She does have Sims 4 and I enjoy watching her play. I actually believe I would really love playing Sims, enough so that I haven’t because I don’t want to add another big time consumer to my life at the moment. If I ever get caught up enough to feel like there’s space for something new, I will almost certainly start playing Sims myself. It’s digital Barbies! I played with my Barbies up to (and even a little after) I started dating DH.

Oh and I read HP because my grandmother was convinced it was of the devil and I wanted to make an informed decision. So glad I did, lol!

We are geeky.  I’m a big fan of classic books and period drama films adapted from books.

Oh, me too. I had no idea how many times some of Jane Austen’s works had been made until we got a Roku and started mining our Prime account. It seems like they redo P&P and S&S at least once a decade. Jane Eyre is one of my all-time favorites. The first time they required it in school I had already read it twice.
