God or Family first?

Post by Duchess »

This was on my Facebook feed today and I thought it might be worth sharing:

Which is first? God or Family?

I have heard some try to prioritize our relationships to God, family and ministry in different ways. Some have said, “God first, then family, then ministry.” I’ve even heard others say, “God first, then ministry, then family.” Of course, those who put ministry over family usually are looking for an excuse to neglect their family and it shows.

What is most important in the heart of God?

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him.” (Gen. 2:18)

God recognized that Adam’s relationship with Him was not enough. In order to accomplish His purposes in the earth, man needed a wife.

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and they will become one flesh. (Gen. 2:24)

God established marriage and family first. It was the first divine institution He created.

Paul spoke of this union between a man and his wife as well. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery, but I am speaking about Christ and the church. (Eph. 5:30-32)

The union of husband and wife is a mystery that reveals Christ and the church! What could be more important than that?

The point is this: Putting family first IS putting God first. It isn’t a choice between God or family. Choosing family is choosing what God chose. Choosing family is choosing God. Marriage and family are ordained by God to reveal the relationship between Christ and the church. It is a covenant relationship of love, giving, sacrifice, blessing and forgiveness. Neglecting marriage and family to “serve God” is a nonsensical statement. When you neglect family, you are neglecting God.

Consider Paul’s admonition: “But if any do not care for their own, and especially for those of their own house, they have denied the faith and are worse than unbelievers.” (1 Tim. 5:8)

Men, if you are seeking ministry, when you honor your bride God will trust you more with His Bride.

Absolutely wrong!
#1 Till Jesus returns relationship with Christ
#2-Till death do us part relationship with your spouse
#3-Till they leave home relationship with your kids
#4- Till the rapture relationship with your church and church family
#5-Till you retire relationship with your job

You should NEVER put anything God created in a position greater than him. NEVER!!

Brother, I think that you may  have missed the point....

"The point is this: Putting family first IS putting God first. It isn’t a choice between God or family. Choosing family is choosing what God chose. Choosing family is choosing God. We see God's handiwork and creation (Romans 1) and sense His presence but we can't see God Himself... nor His Son, Our Lord & Savior Jesus. ... one day we who believe will dwell with them together forever.  But in this life, choosing to love, protect, nurture, and enjoy our spouse and family in the faith is putting God first.

I can get their point, I kind of have an issue with that rating system myself. I don't say Christ is my #1 on a list.... Christ IS my life, not a rank on a list. Christ in me, and me in Him.
God can change what people do, behavioral patterns that have been in play for decades. He can change what we do to cope, to find comfort, to survive conflict, to count. Rahab had done a same old thing for years... and then she did something new.

The idea that because God created a helper(Eve) that He wants man to put her (and family/children) before Him is pure heresy (and foolishness).  Did God praise Adam when he followed his wife into sin?  No.

God (Father, Son, HS) clearly comes before anything or anyone else.  His commands come before anything or anyone else.

When you are doing what God commands you to do for your family as a husband or wife, you are obeying God first and doing good for your family second.  Do it for them first and you are committing idolatry!

Some might say what is the difference, but everything good comes from God including our families and loved ones.  Let's be careful to not worship the created/creation but the Creator.  He is jealous and He deserves to be honored for what He does!

This concept is very important, especially to me. Finally understanding this concept is what pushed me over the edge to conversion. It answered what seemed to be unanswerable - how could I love what I could not see, feel, hear or actively interact with?

John 14:15 If you love me, keep my commandments.

Joh 14:21  Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

Joh 15:10  If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.

1 John 2:3 By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments.

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome,

Seems pretty clear how we are to show our love for God and Christ. Loving and providing for our family is part of the commandments of God. When I  think of the two, they almost become one in my mind. It is one of the primary ways I show my love to and for God. The verses above show us it’s not about having the warm fuzzies for Christ. It’s about how we allow His word to direct our actions. I can believe and yet be lost. Faith without works is dead. You can’t say you love God yet act unlovingly toward your family.

YET - if there is a question, a choice, between family and Jesus, between following His word or pleasing a loved one....

Luk 14:26  CEV “You cannot be my disciple, unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, your wife and children, and your brothers and sisters. You cannot come with me unless you love me more than you love your own life.“

We had a conversation this weekend that made me think of this question and answers.... there was a lady in her mid-60's, who had walked away from the church until she found ours about a year ago. She was a PK, and her dad (mid-80's) seems to be getting his affairs in order before his end comes, including trying to find and talk to a son whom broke contact with him. This is what this lady said, "We knew dad loved the Lord first, we just didn't know if he loved us."

This points to some truth in that devotion. Not everyone who loves their family IS loving God, but if you aren't loving your family you ARE NOT loving God, no matter what "righteous" acts you do.
